Accommodation and Camping

Along with some excellent terrain and mouth-watering restaurants, Mt Hotham has a variety of accommodation to choose from.

If you’re attending the festival, you will need to organise your own accommodation. Below are some ideas of where to stay on and off the mountain.

VBCF have no financial relationship with any of these accommodation providers. This information is supplied to help you with your planning for the festival. Feel free to contact us for additions or updates.

Camping at JB Plain

If you’re thinking of camping out during the festival, the primo ‘above snowline car camping’ option is at JB Plain. This is on the Great Alpine Road between Hotham Village and Dinner Plain (closer to the Dinner Plain end). This is within the Alpine National Park. Please ensure you take all rubbish with you. Permits are not required.

There are approx 10 car spots to park on the side of the road. Please be aware that there is only limited spaces so use them wisely, and make sure you’re safely off the road or carpool if possible.

It’s a short walk into the trees, which provide many sheltered spots for camping.

There is a hut, but Parks Victoria prefers people to camp if staying at JB Plain.

There is also a simple ‘outhouse’ toilet.

JB Plain is only a 2km ski to Dinner Plain, where there is a public shelter, toilets, and a number of options to get food including the High Plains Hotel, The Hub, and The Stables.

If you park your car at Dinner Plain, there is a resort bus that runs from Dinner Plain to Big D (very close to the festival gathering point at The General) and Hotham Central. You will need a bus pass which can be purchased online. Tickets and timetable available here: https://www.visitdinnerplain.com.au/getting-here/bus-service/bus-to-hotham/.

If you’re planning to camp, please RSVP on our Facebook event page through the link below.

Free Breakfast for Festival Campers

Patagonia will be hosting a free breakfast for all Victorian Backcountry Festival campers at The Moth on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

To help Patagonia cater for breakfast and help the resort know how much space we need, please RSVP on our Facebook page if you’re planning to camp at JB Plain.

Alpine Accommodation & Travel

Alpine Accommodation & Travel was set up by former long time Hotham local Lindsay (aka Wookie) Hynes & his wife Jennifer. After having their daughter, Jen wanted to get back into doing what she loved: planning holidays, and where better to holiday than our Alpine resorts so she quit her job in accounts and set up Alpine Accommodation.

“We work with quite a number of lodges ranging from budget through to all inclusive lodges. We don’t just book lodges we also have a large range of apartments & chalets at both Hotham & Dinner Plain. With over 25 seasons experience let our team help you book the perfect accommodation for you, your family & your friends”.
