Speakers and Films

This year there will be two streams during the festival covering environment, skills and adventure. In addition to some great speakers, we have a number of locally produced backcountry films.

Speaker sessions are free for festival registrants.

During the sessions, please thank your volunteer speakers for generously donating their time and sharing their backcountry skills with the community.

Thanks to The General at Mt Hotham for hosting us in their upstairs dining room.

Saurday 2nd September 2:00pm to 4:30pm, Upstairs at The General:

Mobilising the Outdoors Community

Presented by The North Face who are providing a generous bar tab, with drinks and nibblies, and some lucky door prizes for attendees.

Outdoors people can see the changes that are coming to the mountains and wild places we love. How can we act effectively to protect these places?

Come along and hear from a range of outdoor groups and to learn about how they are mobilising the outdoors community and achieving lasting change.

Featuring:

Omar Elkadi, Protect Our Winters (POW)

Omar will introduce the POW Australia community and what the team of volunteers is up to as they grow out ambitiously to address the effects of climate change to our Australian snow. He will provide an overview of what POW has achieved this year and what is coming up for the rest of the season, whilst reaffirming the strategy of the group to tackle climate initiatives in our own backyard.

Omar is the current Head of Events and resident climate nerd at POW Australia, working as a Climate Strategist in his day job. He is a passionate skier with seasons under his belt at home and abroad, with Falls Creek being his snowy spiritual home. He enjoys skins out into the Snowies or across the high plains, a cheeky brew or two and a good laugh with like-minded powder hounds.

Hilary McAllister, For Wild Places – trail running group

For Wild Places’ goal is to empower trail runners to become sports activists and help protect the wild places we love to explore.  Although FWP’s focus is on the trail community, they are hoping to build a model that can be adapted and utilized by all trail users and outdoor enthusiasts.  In this session, Hilary will share some of the initiatives and learnings experienced by FWP during their three years of operation, including insights into what has worked, what hasn’t, and the future aspirations of this small but growing not-for-profit.

Hilary is a co-founder and CEO of For Wild Places, as well as an experienced yet accident-prone outdoors woman, often unmotivated ultra-runner, political wannabe and activist in training.  Through her adventures and advocacy work, Hilary hopes to grow awareness of the threats that face our natural world and guide people to take meaningful action to protect these wild and wonderful places.

Finishing with a short film:

Steep Reflections, with a Q&A with producer Cameron ‘Woody’ Wood

I was raised in the mountains of the Scottish Highlands, this is where my obsession began. Like many we all have that place we call ‘Home’, the place where our deepest memories lie, and where our passion came to fruition. My passion is skiing. A culture rich sport which provides a way of life, and a community that speaks the same language wherever you go. Scotland is where it began for me, but skiing has led me on a journey to recognize this planet is our ‘Home’.

My love for skiing has taken my life on twists and turns, from competing in freestyle and freeride, to pursuing a career as a Backcountry Ski Guide. Grateful for my opportunities, I look towards creating a future where people get to enjoy the same. After witnessing the effects a changing climate has on our ecosystem and the sports we live for. I realise the urgency for change, now more than ever. We all have a connection to this environment, let’s turn our connection into action. POW gives us all a voice in fighting for the things we love.

You can find out more about the film here.

Woody will have some great lucky door prizes from The North Face to give away at the event!

Thinking Big on Outdoor Adventures

Build your foundations in Australia before you go north

Alex Parsons and Owen Lansbury

Alex is the Programs Coordinator for Thredbo, MSC Observer & Ambassador, POW and Arc’teryx Ambassador. Owen is Thredbo’s Head Guide and MSC Communications Director. Both guide here in Australia and have worked and adventured extensively overseas.

Following the COVID backcountry boom, large numbers of Australians are taking their backcountry skills to Canada, Japan and Europe where the risks and consequences are exponentially greater than at home. Find out what you can do to develop your backcountry skills and routines before you head overseas and how to stay safe while you’re there!

Ice Hazard case studies presentation

Bill Barker is the Mt Hotham Ski Patrol Director and an experienced Antarctic and Himalayan Ski Guide. He has decades of experience with snow safety and knows the Hotham resort and backcountry as well as anyone. He has also seen, and responded to, countless accidents and rescues.

Bill will present some of the ice hazard slide accidents that have happened over the years and provide guidance about how to stay safe in the backcountry.

Planning considerations in the backcountry

Hagen Dobrautz is well known local, and owner of Tirol Sports, will provide an overview of group dynamics and risk acceptance. We all have different levels of technical skills, skiing/ riding ability, and levels of acceptance of risk. When we travel in a group, this can cause dilemmas in the backcountry in terms of safety, group dynamics and route planning.

Finishing with four short films:

Regeneration – Racha

A ski film like no other, taking you on an epic 8-day backcountry trip to the Western Highlands of Georgia. Join Andy and Jack as they venture into the mountains, seeking fresh turns and a mountain escape in an old Soviet hunting hut. But what they find along the way is a gripping wake-up call to the lives and culture of the countries surrounding Russia. With tensions high due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Georgian guides provide a unique insight into the conflicts that have affected their country and others.

Through stunning cinematography and powerful storytelling, Regeneration – Racha takes you on a journey of discovery, where the love of skiing leads to an unexpected education, and a story that demands to be told.

Andy Hardy is the producer, and principal cinematographer, Jack Arthur was co-pilot and provided additional cinematography.

The Australian Alp - Taylor Bennie-Faull

Mt Feathertop's striking beauty holds a special place in the hearts of the Australian backcountry snow community. As one of the only mountains here that resembles its northern hemisphere counterparts, The Australian Alp tells a story of the profound impact it's had on a group of keen explorers.

Taylor is a documentary filmmaker based out of Melbourne who seeks to empower viewers through connecting them to the deeper emotions of storytelling. He's been active in outdoor sports from a young age which has fostered his love for the  natural world and ways to reduce ecological footprints. His aspiration is to use his documentaries as a means to engage others with the environment.

‘Australian Drift: Moments from the Australian Backcountry’

Filmed over the past two years, Australian Drift is a collection of moments through the lens of Dylan Robinson during short and long backcountry adventures in the Australian Alps. Enjoy the ups, downs, lefts, and rights of our backyard.

‘Mori’

'Mori' is a film by Dylan Robinson documenting the return to the deep powder tree skiing of Japan after a long hiatus for Australians.
